This printmaking workshop will focus on the Bicknell's Thrush- a rare bird with a very restricted range that breeds above 3000 feet in the White Mountains  MaryAnn McGarry, the instructor, will first provide information and showcase multimedia material about the status of the bird from a project she ran at Plymouth State University to raise awareness about the bird.

MaryAnn will introduce participants to tools, and provide a demonstration of the printing process.  We will be etching in soft foam with pencils. Then, we will use water soluble ink and print on painted canvas, watercolor paper, or cards. All materials will be provided: smooth printing surface- plexiglass, inks, spatulas for spreading ink, brayer for rolling ink and transferring ink to etched foam, spoons or barens (Japanese handtool) for applying pressure for the ink to transfer to canvas or paper. Natural objects from the bird's nesting habitat cand be inked and added to the prints like stamps.

McGarry is professor Emerita of Environmental Science and Policy from Plymouth State University and lives in Plymouth, NH. She was a Visiting Artist at Artistic Roots in Plymouth, NH in 2025. She had three pieces, including two prints in the 2025 Tuckerman's Ravine show at Three Sisters Gallery. She has given presentations on the Bicknell's Thrush for NH Audubon and Appalachian Mountain Club.
